The Wolf and the Crane
One day, a hungry Wolf was eating his food very quickly.
He gobbled and gulped without slowing down.
Suddenly, a sharp bone became stuck in his throat!
The Wolf coughed.
He choked.
He tried to swallow.
He tried to spit it out.
But nothing worked.
The bone would not move.
“Oh no!” cried the Wolf. “What am I going to do?”
The Wolf could not eat, and his throat hurt badly.
Then he thought of the Crane.
The Crane had a very long neck and a long, narrow beak.
“She can help me!” he said.
The Wolf hurried to find her.
When he found the Crane, he begged for help.
“Please remove this bone from my throat,” said the Wolf.
“If you help me, I will give you a wonderful reward.”
The Crane was nervous.
After all, the Wolf was known for being dangerous.
But she liked the idea of earning a reward.
So she agreed.
Carefully, the Crane stretched her long neck into the Wolf’s mouth.
She reached farther and farther down his throat.
At last, she grabbed the bone with her beak.
Pull!
Out came the bone.
The Wolf could breathe again.
He felt much better.
Without saying another word, he turned around and started walking away.
“Wait!” called the Crane.
“What about the reward you promised me?”
The Wolf stopped and glared at her.
“Reward?” he growled.
“You put your head inside my mouth and I didn’t bite you.”
“Isn’t that reward enough?”
Then the Wolf walked away.
The Crane realized that she had trusted someone who could not be trusted.
The Lesson: Do not expect kindness or rewards from those who are dishonest and selfish.
