One spring morning, a Swallow and a Crow were sitting together on a fence.
The Swallow was very proud of her beautiful feathers.
They were soft, smooth, and shiny.
She spread her wings and admired them in the sunlight.
Then she looked at the Crow.
The Crow’s feathers were plain black.
The Swallow smiled and said,
“Just look at my beautiful feathers!”
“They are bright and soft.”
“Your feathers are dark and plain.”
“Why don’t you try to look a little nicer?”
The Crow listened quietly.
Then he replied calmly,
“Your feathers are certainly lovely in the spring.”
“But I have noticed something.”
“Every winter, when the weather becomes cold, you fly away to warmer places.”
The Swallow nodded.
“That’s true.”
The Crow smiled.
“But I stay here all winter long.”
“I can handle the cold and enjoy every season.”
The Swallow thought about what the Crow had said.
She realized that beauty was not the only thing that mattered.
The Crow may not have had colorful feathers, but he was strong, dependable, and able to face difficult times.
And that is something to be proud of too.
