Once upon a time, a young Shepherd Boy watched over a flock of sheep near a forest.
Every day, he took the sheep out to graze in the green pasture.
Most days were quiet and peaceful.
The Boy had little to do except watch the sheep, play his shepherd’s pipe, and spend time with his dog.
After a while, he became bored.
One day, he thought of a mischievous idea.
“If I shout that a wolf is coming,” he said to himself, “the villagers will run here to help me!”
So he jumped up and ran toward the village, shouting as loudly as he could.
“Wolf! Wolf! Help! A wolf is attacking the sheep!”
The villagers heard him.
They dropped their work and hurried to the pasture.
But when they arrived, there was no wolf.
The Boy laughed and laughed.
“It was only a joke!” he said.
The villagers were not amused.
A few days later, the Boy played the same trick again.
“Wolf! Wolf!” he cried.
Once again, the villagers rushed to help.
And once again, there was no wolf.
The Boy laughed at them for believing him.
The villagers shook their heads and returned home.
Then one evening, as the sun was setting and the shadows grew long across the field, something happened.
A real wolf crept out of the forest.
The wolf rushed toward the sheep.

This time, he ran toward the village shouting with all his might.
“Wolf! Wolf! Please help! There really is a wolf!”
The villagers heard him.
But they remembered his tricks.
“He is trying to fool us again,” they said.
“No one can trust what he says.”
So no one came to help.
The wolf frightened the sheep and carried some away before disappearing back into the forest.
The Boy sat sadly in the pasture.
He had learned an important lesson.
