The Shepherd and the Lion – An Aesop Fable for Children

One evening, a Shepherd was counting his sheep as they returned to the pasture.
“One, two, three, four…”
Suddenly, he stopped.
Several sheep were missing.
The Shepherd became very angry.
“Someone has been stealing my sheep!” he shouted. “When I find the thief, I’ll make sure he is punished!”
The Shepherd believed that a Wolf was responsible.
The next morning, he set off into the rocky hills where many wild animals were known to live. Before leaving, he looked up at the sky and made a promise.
“If you help me find the thief,” he said, “I will offer a fine fat calf in thanks.”
With that, he began his search.
He walked through valleys and climbed over rocky slopes. He searched near bushes, behind boulders, and around dark caves.
Hour after hour passed.
But he found no sign of a Wolf.
At last, as he was passing a large cave on the side of a mountain, something moved in the shadows.
Out stepped a huge Lion.
The mighty beast was carrying one of the Shepherd’s missing sheep in its jaws.
The Shepherd froze.
His face turned pale.
This was no Wolf.
This was far worse.
The Lion looked enormous, powerful, and terrifying.
The frightened Shepherd dropped to his knees and cried out,
“Oh, Jupiter! How foolish I have been! I asked you to help me find the thief, and now I have found him!”
The Lion took another step forward.
The Shepherd trembled.
“Forget the calf I promised!” he begged. “If you will only make this Lion go away, I will gladly offer you a full-grown bull instead!”
The Lion stared at him for a moment.
Then, without another glance, it turned and disappeared back into the hills with the sheep.
The Shepherd breathed a great sigh of relief.
As he hurried home, he thought carefully about what had happened.
He had been eager to find the thief—until he actually found him.
Then he realized that some wishes are not as wonderful as they seem.

Remember: Be careful what you wish for. Sometimes what we seek can bring us more trouble than we expect.

Another Lesson: We are often less eager for something after we finally find it.
