The Rose and the Butterfly – Aesop’s Fable for Kids About Honesty and Loyalty

In a beautiful garden, a Butterfly admired a lovely Rose.

The Rose was pleased by the Butterfly’s colorful wings, which shimmered in the sunlight like gold and silver.

Before long, they became good friends.

“I think you’re the most beautiful flower in the garden,” said the Butterfly.

“And I think you’re the most graceful creature I’ve ever seen,” replied the Rose.

They spent many happy days together, promising that they would always be special friends.

One day, the Butterfly flew away to explore the garden.

Days passed.

Then more days passed.

When he finally returned, the Rose was upset.

“You’ve been gone for such a long time!” she said. “While you were away, I saw you visiting all sorts of other flowers. You spent time with the Geranium, the Daisy, and many others.”

The Butterfly frowned.

“That’s not fair,” he replied. “While I was gone, I saw bees, bugs, and even the wind stopping to visit you. You seemed happy to give attention to everyone who came by.”

The Rose thought about his words.

And the Butterfly did too.

Soon they both realized they had made the same mistake. Each expected loyalty from the other while failing to show it themselves.

Neither could demand something they were unwilling to give.

Remember: If you expect honesty, loyalty, and respect from others, you should be willing to show those same qualities yourself.
