The Hare and the Tortoise – An Aesop Fable for Children
One bright morning, a Hare was boasting about how fast he could run.
As he raced around the meadow, he spotted a Tortoise slowly making his way along the path.
The Hare laughed.
“You are so slow!” he said. “Do you ever get anywhere on time?”
The Tortoise looked up calmly.
“Yes, I do,” he replied. “In fact, I can get there sooner than you think.”
The Hare chuckled.
“I would like to see that!”
The Tortoise smiled.
“Then let us have a race,” he said. “I will prove it.”
The Hare laughed even harder.
“A race? Between you and me? That would be the easiest race I have ever won!”
But he agreed, just for fun.
A Fox was chosen to be the judge. He marked the starting line and the finish line, then called the runners into position.
“Ready… set… go!”
Off they went.
The Hare shot forward like an arrow. In moments, he was far ahead of the Tortoise.
The Tortoise, meanwhile, moved at his usual pace—slow, steady, and determined.
After running a short distance, the Hare looked back.
The Tortoise was nowhere close.
“This is ridiculous,” said the Hare. “I have plenty of time.”
Seeing a shady spot beside the path, he stretched out in the grass.
“I’ll take a little nap,” he said. “Then I’ll finish the race whenever I feel like it.”
Before long, the Hare was fast asleep.
Meanwhile, the Tortoise kept moving.
Step by step.
Slowly but steadily.
He never stopped.
He never looked back.
He simply continued toward the finish line.
After a while, he passed the sleeping Hare and kept going.
The Hare slept peacefully, dreaming that he had already won the race.
At last, he woke up.
He jumped to his feet and looked toward the finish line.
To his surprise, the Tortoise was almost there!
The Hare raced forward as fast as he could.
His feet flew across the ground.
But it was too late.
Just before the Hare reached the finish line, the Tortoise crossed it first.
The Fox raised his paw and announced the winner.
“The Tortoise wins!”
The animals cheered.
The Hare hung his head in embarrassment, while the Tortoise smiled quietly.
He had won not because he was fast, but because he never gave up.
Moral: Slow and steady wins the race. Success comes to those who keep going and do not quit.
