The Dog and His Reflection – An Aesop Fable for Children
One day, a butcher tossed a bone to a hungry Dog.
The Dog was delighted.
He picked up the bone in his mouth and hurried home as fast as he could. He was proud of his prize and could already imagine enjoying a delicious meal.
As he trotted along, he came to a narrow footbridge that crossed a calm, clear stream.
The Dog paused for a moment and looked down into the water.
There, in the stream below, he saw what appeared to be another Dog.
And that Dog seemed to be carrying an even bigger bone!
The Dog’s eyes grew wide.
“What a wonderful bone!” he thought. “It’s much larger than mine. I want that one instead!”
He never stopped to think that the image in the water might only be a reflection.
Without a moment’s hesitation, he opened his mouth and leaped toward the other Dog.
The instant he did, his own bone dropped into the stream and disappeared beneath the water.
Splash!
The Dog found himself in the cold river, paddling hard to stay afloat.
There was no other Dog.
There was no bigger bone.
There was only his reflection.
At last, he managed to swim back to shore.
Soaked and tired, he climbed onto the bank and sat down sadly.
His bone was gone, and there was no way to get it back.
As he thought about what had happened, he realized his mistake.
If he had been content with the bone he already had, he would still have it.
Instead, his greed had cost him everything.
Don’t Forget: It is foolish to be greedy. Those who always want more may lose what they already have.
