The Cat and the Fox – Aesop’s Fable for Kids About Common Sense and Wise Choices

One day, a Cat and a Fox were traveling through the countryside together.

As they walked, they found food along the way—a mouse here, a chicken there—and enjoyed a pleasant journey.

Before long, they began discussing who was cleverer.

The Fox puffed out his chest proudly.

“You may think you’re smart,” he said, “but I know dozens of tricks for getting out of trouble. No matter what happens, I’ll always have a plan.”

The Cat smiled.

“That’s impressive,” she replied. “As for me, I know only one trick. But it has never failed me.”

The Fox laughed.

“Only one trick? Then you can’t possibly be as clever as I am!”

Just then, they heard the distant sound of hunting dogs.

The barking grew louder and louder.

Without hesitation, the Cat sprang up the nearest tree and hid safely among the branches.

“This is my one trick!” she called down. “It’s simple, but it works.”

Meanwhile, the Fox panicked.

“I have so many choices,” he thought. “Which one should I use?”

He ran one way, then another. He changed direction repeatedly and tried several different escape plans.

But while he was deciding what to do, the dogs came closer and closer.

The Cat watched from her safe spot in the tree.

The Fox had spent so much time choosing among his many tricks that he never used any of them effectively.

At last, he realized that having many complicated plans was not always an advantage.

Remember: A simple, reliable solution is often better than many complicated ones. Common sense and good judgment are more valuable than showing off how clever you are.
