One evening, a Bat accidentally flew into the home of a Weasel.
The Weasel pounced at once.
“At last!” he said. “A Mouse! I can’t stand mice, and I never let one escape.”
The Bat was terrified.
“But I’m not a Mouse!” he cried. “Look at my wings. Mice don’t fly. I’m much more like a Bird.”
The Weasel looked carefully.
The Bat was right. He did have wings.
“I suppose you’re not really a Mouse,” said the Weasel.
Reluctantly, he let the Bat go.
A few days later, the Bat got himself into trouble again.
While flying through the night, he accidentally entered the home of another Weasel.
This Weasel grabbed him immediately.
“Perfect!” said the Weasel. “A Bird! Birds are my favorite prey.”
“A Bird?” exclaimed the Bat. “Surely not! Birds have feathers, and I don’t have any feathers at all. I’m really just a Mouse.”
The Weasel examined him.
Once again, the Bat’s argument made sense.
“You certainly don’t look much like a Bird,” he admitted.
And so he released the Bat.
The Bat flew away safely for the second time, thankful that he had managed to think quickly when danger appeared.
