I Spy – Outdoor Game that combines hide-and-seek, tag, and team strategy

Players: 6 or more
Location: Outdoors
Age Group: School-age children

I Spy is an energetic outdoor game that combines hide-and-seek, tag, and team strategy.

Setup

Players divide into two teams:

  • Hiders
  • Seekers

A designated location, known as Home Base (called “Bounds” in the original game), is chosen. The Seekers remain at Home Base with their eyes covered while the Hiders spread out and find hiding places.

The Countdown

After allowing time for the Hiders to hide, the Seekers call out:

“Coming, coming, coming!”

They repeat the call several times at short intervals.

If a Hider is not yet ready, they may call back:

“No!”

The Seekers then wait a little longer before making their final call and beginning the search.

The Search

One Seeker may remain at Home Base while the others search for the Hiders.

When a Seeker spots a Hider, they shout:

“I spy!”

The Seeker must then race back to Home Base.

At the same time, the discovered Hider chases after them, attempting to tag them before they reach safety.

Scoring

  • If the Seeker reaches Home Base first, the Hider is considered caught.
  • If the Hider tags the Seeker before they arrive, the Seeker is out or receives a penalty, depending on the chosen rules.

Meanwhile, hidden players can move strategically and try to intercept Seekers on their way back to Home Base.

The Home Base Guard

The player left at Home Base acts as a lookout. If approaching Hiders threaten the Seekers, the guard can warn teammates by shouting:

“Home!”

This alerts the Seekers to return quickly to safety.

Winning

Teams can decide on a target number of successful tags or captures. In the traditional version, if the Hiders manage to tag a certain number of Seekers (commonly three), they earn another turn as the hiding team.

Why It’s Fun

Unlike ordinary hide-and-seek, I Spy doesn’t end when a player is found. Spotting a Hider triggers a race, turning every discovery into a chase. Success depends on a combination of hiding skill, speed, teamwork, and timing, making it an exciting game for large outdoor groups.
