Pyramid Guard – Traditional Team Game That Combines Throwing, Chasing, Strategy, and Teamwork

Players: 3 or more
Location: Outdoors
Equipment: A soft ball and several flat stones or pebbles

Pyramid Guard is a traditional team game that combines throwing, chasing, strategy, and teamwork.

Setup

Several flat stones or pebbles are stacked on top of one another to form a small tower or pyramid. One player is chosen as the Keeper, whose job is to protect the pyramid.

The remaining players stand about 4 metres (13 feet) away from the pyramid with a ball.

How to Play

The challengers take turns throwing the ball at the pyramid, attempting to knock it down.

Once the pyramid is hit and the stones scatter:

  1. All of the challengers run in different directions.
  2. The Keeper retrieves the ball.
  3. The Keeper tries to defend the pyramid while preventing the other players from rebuilding it.

The Keeper’s Role

The Keeper may use the ball to eliminate opponents by hitting them below the shoulders with a throw (or by tagging them with the ball in a safer modern version).

Any player who is hit is out of the round.

The Keeper must constantly decide whether to:

  • Stay close to the pyramid and guard it.
  • Chase nearby players.
  • Recover the ball after a throw.

The Challengers’ Goal

The challengers work together to rebuild the pyramid by stacking all of the stones back into their original tower.

They often use teamwork and distractions:

  • One player may draw the Keeper away from the pyramid.
  • Another may secretly begin rebuilding the stack.
  • Several players may cooperate to distract the Keeper while a teammate finishes the tower.

Winning

  • The challengers win if they successfully rebuild the entire pyramid before all players are eliminated.
  • The Keeper wins if all challengers are eliminated before the pyramid is rebuilt.

Modern Safety Adaptation

For children’s play, use:

  • A soft foam or playground ball.
  • Lightweight stacking blocks instead of stones.
  • Tagging with the ball rather than throwing hard at players.

Skills Developed

  • Teamwork
  • Accuracy
  • Strategy
  • Agility
  • Communication

Why It’s Fun

Pyramid Guard creates a constant balance between attack and defense. The Keeper must protect the pyramid while the challengers work together to rebuild it, leading to exciting chases, clever distractions, and dramatic last-second attempts to complete the tower.
