Jack Be Nimble Jumping Game – Playground Games for Kids

  • Players: 10–60
  • Location: Indoors or outdoors
  • Age Group: Young children

This simple and energetic game is ideal for younger children.

Place a small object about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) high on the ground to act as the “candlestick.” A small box, book, plastic bottle, or other lightweight object works well.

Players line up in single file and take turns running forward and jumping over the candlestick with both feet together. As they play, everyone recites the traditional rhyme:

“Jack be nimble,
Jack be quick,
And Jack jump over the candlestick.”

The game continues as players circle back and repeat the jump.

For larger groups, set up several candlesticks and divide players into multiple lines so everyone stays active. In a classroom or indoor setting, children can follow a designated path around desks or seating areas while taking turns jumping over the obstacle.

This game helps develop balance, coordination, rhythm, and confidence, while keeping the rules simple enough for very young players to enjoy.
