Step 1 – Draw the Basic Shapes
- Draw a medium-sized circle for the crane’s head.
- Sketch a long, slightly curved line passing through the upper part of the circle. This will become the top of the beak and head crest.
- Draw a second curved line starting at the beak and passing beneath the circle. This will form the lower beak and neck.
- Extend both lines forward to create the long, pointed beak.
Step 2 – Add the Main Features
- Draw the eye near the front upper portion of the circle.
- Shape the upper and lower beak using the guide lines.
- Sketch the curve of the cheek and throat with light construction lines.
- Extend the back of the head into a flowing neck.
- Add the raised feather crest on top of the head.
Step 3 – Refine the Outline
- Erase unnecessary construction lines.
- Smooth the curves of the head and neck.
- Sharpen the beak into a long, narrow point.
- Refine the crest so it flows naturally backward.
- Adjust the eye and facial contours for a clean silhouette.
Step 4 – Add Details and Texture
- Draw feather texture on the crest using short, curved strokes.
- Darken the beak, leaving small highlights if desired.
- Add subtle feather marks around the eye and neck.
- Strengthen the outline where shadows naturally occur.
- Clean up the drawing and erase any remaining guidelines.
Tips
- Start with light pencil strokes so corrections are easy.
- Focus on the overall proportions before adding details.
- Keep the beak long and slender for a realistic crane appearance.
- Build feather texture gradually instead of drawing every feather.
- Finish by increasing contrast with darker lines around the eye, beak, and crest.
