Dropping The Handkerchief Game – Outdoor Games for Kids

A reasonably large circle is formed by a group of children standing hand in hand. One child starts outside the circle as the runner. When everyone is ready, the runner walks around the outside of the circle and quietly drops a handkerchief (or another small object) behind one of the players before immediately running away.

As soon as the chosen player notices the handkerchief, they pick it up and chase the runner. The runner may weave in and out of the circle, passing under raised arms and changing direction as they go. The children in the circle help by lifting their joined hands to create pathways for the chase.

If the chaser manages to tag the runner, the chaser becomes the new runner and takes the handkerchief, while the tagged child joins the circle.

If the runner successfully avoids being tagged, they continue around the circle and may drop the handkerchief behind a different player, starting a new chase.
